Experience
I earned my Licentiate degree (which is similar to a Bachelor’s degree) in Communication Sciences at Rafael Landívar University. My dad is from the States, so I grew up speaking English and Spanish simultaneously. I love learning about languages: their peculiarities, words’ etymology, how a word in one language manages to express something that requires an extensive explanation in another language. My dexterity in both languages has been a useful asset while working: 1) as a TA, I translated video chats between professors and students; 2) as a freelancer, I wrote the English subtitles for a documentary about what it means to be a man in Guatemala. I began tutoring in college when I worked as an intern lab assistant at the Communications Technology Laboratories of the university. There, I assisted and supervised students while they worked on video, audio, photography, and graphic design projects. Whenever they had difficulties with a certain editing program, I would: 1) talk to them, figuring out what they wanted to do; 2) brainstorm with them about the multiple ways they could go about accomplishing what they wanted; 3) supervise them while they worked on their projects. It really is a wonderful feeling when a student learns how to do something and then they make it their own. Later, I worked as a TA on four occasions: 1) Alternative Television, 2) Communication Debates II – Strategic Planning Scenarios, 3) Diversity and Cultures in Guatemala, 4) Applied Semiotics. I had the opportunity to teach several classes during that time. I am very easy going when I teach. I enjoy stimulating the students’ curiosity by exposing the topic at hand, then talking about it, asking them what they think about it. In doing so, I allow them to link the topic with their experiences and, therefore, the learning experience becomes much more successful. At the moment, I am starting my first year in a master’s program (M.A. in Mass Communication) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My preferred locations for tutoring sessions are libraries and coffee shops around campus.
