Annabel H.
Private tutor in Durham, NC
Education
I am a current Freshman at Duke University, and hope to graduate with a degree in biology and biophysics in 2022. Although I am naturally inclined towards math and sciences, I have always very much enjoyed studying humanities and languages too. I graduated from the Godolphin & Latymer High School in London, United Kingdom in July 2018. Godolphin & Latymer, which has highly selective entry, is one of the leading private schools in the United Kingdom.
Experience
Tutoring Experiences: I was selected by my own High School as a mentor to help younger students prepare for their international GCSE (UK equivalent of AP exams) in biology, chemistry, physics, religious studies, and Latin. I self-taught for the ACT, SAT, and subject tests (please see scores below), mastering both studying and test-taking techniques. My main takeaway from these experiences is that such standardised testing is unlike any other high school test, and really requires unique attention. As Student President of my High School, one of my responsibilities included being the student point of contact for the 11th grade. Given that this is when GCSE examinations are taken, academic support was a large component of this role and I often met individually with students who required some extra attention outside of classes. I have also tutored several students for Private School Entrance Examinations, specifically within English and Math. All my students were selected to their first-choice school. Please see below for various test scores I have achieved during high school: Awarded IB Diploma with 41 points (top 1.8% worldwide). Higher Level Subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Philosophy. Standard Level Subjects: English, Latin, Math. SAT (taken once in October 2017): Scored 1580 (out of a maximum of 1600) with 800 in Math and 780 in Reading/ Writing. SAT subject tests in Math Level I, Math Level II, and Literature. All scores >750 and all taken once. ACT taken once in April 2017 with 32 points (out of a maximum of 36). International GCSEs (Essentially UK equivalent of AP tests): Mathematics: A+ (taken in 2015, a year early) Further Mathematics: A+ English Literature: A+ English Language: A+ Latin: A+ Mandarin: A+ Spanish: A+ Religious Studies: A Chemistry: A+ Biology: A+ Physics: A+

Hobbies
Born and raised in London, United Kingdom, I am now a student at Duke University. I decided to come to the United States for college because of its Liberal Arts education system, which uniquely allowed me to explore pretty much any of my interests within an academic context. I really do love discovering new ideas, particularly when they're about cultures and communities of which I have no previous experience or knowledge. I am passionate about mental health and wellbeing, and started numerous initiatives at my high school in London to promote awareness of this issue. I will continue working towards this mission of an eliminated stigma at college and beyond. I love running - though I'm certainly no athlete. I'm very much looking forward to finding routes in North Carolina and specifically Durham. Judging by Google Maps, it looks like it can give London's park scene a run for its money! I play the cello and piano. I love both these instruments mainly because of their versatility - I have played music from such a wide range of genres, so they make for a very dynamic hobby. However, my favourite part of playing the cello and piano is undoubtedly that they enable me to join orchestras and ensembles. I've met some of my closest friends through these and we've had some great experiences together, like touring Austria and performing with orchestras from Hamburg and London.
