Experience
My goal is to help people become conversant in the “language” of mathematics. As an engineer by training, I use math primarily in the service of modeling: the mathematical representation of a real world object or process in order to describe, analyze, or predict its behavior. Modeling is the bridge between 'how something is done' and 'why one is doing it' that often makes conceptual understanding initially difficult. I believe in developing a system where, in addition to addressing the specific questions of a student, reinforcing the knowledge by having the student create their own original questions using real world data, e.g. a box score from a baseball game. In this way the student generates a folder of solved problems that reinforces their understanding. I believe this modeling-based approach can serve as a useful complement to a primary math or science instructor. I have recently started a blog where I give my thoughts about math and math education, available upon initial meeting. Previously I have mentored at Community HOPE, a reading comprehension and mentoring program sponsored through the Raleigh YMCA. Have a great day!
